Helical piers are typically used for residential homes, which are lighter weight than larger commercial structures. Helical pier systems are typically used for homes with crawl spaces or basements, as they can work with the subsurface structure to lift and restore.

Push Piers

Unlike helical piers, push piers are shaped like smooth poles without any spiral tip. They’re drilled into the ground using hydraulic force and are typically used to support larger, commercially sized and owned buildings. However, they can be used for residential homes in many cases.

How Pier Systems Are Installed

  1. A foundation professional will inspect your home for damage and evaluate which type of pier system is best for your home. 
  2. On installation day, technicians excavate soil from around your home’s foundation to expose the footing. 
  3. Installers will chip off a section of the foundation footing and dug beneath it to attach brackets to the bottom of the foundation where the piers will connect. 
  4. This step is where pier systems differ:
  • Push piers are then placed onto the brackets, and hydraulically driven straight into the soil below until it hits bedrock or load-bearing strata. 
  • Helical piers are screwed down into the soil until it reaches a load-bearing portion of soil, or all the way down into the bedrock. 
  1. The piers act like stilts, using the weight of the home to press against the piers and stabilize.

Signs Your Home Needs Foundation Piers

Cracks
